Maori King recuperating after surgery

7:02 pm on 5 September 2013

The Maori King, Tuheitia, has undergone surgery on Thursday for a condition related to his diabetes.

The King stepped back from his official duties in June, to focus on his health.

His office says he had a minor operation on Thursday morning and is now recuperating at home.

It's not divulging details, but says the procedure was recommended by the King's doctors, to better manage his condition.

Tuheitia is not expected to take up his public role again until the New Year.

In the meantime, the King's son, Whatumoana has taken on some of his father's duties.

The 22-year-old is now known as Te Whirinaki - the closest - a title first given to King Mahuta's brother, who stood in for the King early last century.
