League president hopes member numbers will increase

The president of the Maori Women's Welfare League is hopeful new technology is the answer to turnaround a drop in the welfare group's membership.

The league is a welfare group which helps Maori women and children by providing services such as budgeting advice and access to a nanny.

It's holding its 62nd annual conference in Whakatane this week.

League president Kataraina O'Brien says the league currently has about 3000 members, but she hopes by this time next year the number will have gone up.

She says interest from the younger generation has already been seen since the introduction of social-networking technology within the last year.
