The number of Maori seats will stay at seven as a result of this year's Census data.

Statistics New Zealand on Monday released the results of its latest Census, taken on 5 March 2013.

One of its uses is to determine if new electorates need to be created and, while there will be a new general seat in the North Island, there aren't enough people on the Maori roll to create an eighth Maori electorate.

During the past seven years, those registering on the Maori roll increased to 256,212 - a rise of 5% - while the number on the general roll who declared they were of Maori descent increased to nearly 203,64 - up more than 14%.

Overall, the number of people reporting to be of Maori descent reached 755,598, a boost of 34,167 since the last Census.
