No changes proposed for Maori electorates

No changes are planned to the boundaries of the seven Maori electorates.

The Representation Commission has proposed changes to 43 electorates and added a general electorate in Auckland, to manage population changes.

However, it has decided that the boundaries for the seven Maori electorates will remain the same for the next two general elections, because they are within quota.

Census data released in May showed that not enough people are registered on the Maori roll to create an eighth seat.

About 756,000 people report to be of Maori descent.

The Representation Commission will hold public hearings on the proposed boundaries in February and they are expected to be confirmed by April next year.
