The New Zealand Maori Council will continue as it is - despite fears by the organisation that it could be shut down.
Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples says there will be no changes to the 1962 Maori Community Development Act, which legislates the Council.
The decision was made after 20 public consultation hui were held around the country.
Dr Sharples said more than 1200 submissions supported the retention of the Maori Council.
He said Cabinet has this week agreed that there will be no changes to the Act in respect of the council.
Earlier this year, the Maori Council worried that any reforms to the 1962 Act would threaten the national body.
The feedback from public consultation also highlighted differing views on whether an independent body should oversee the Maori Wardens or if the responsibility should remain with District Maori Councils.
