The Maori Party says the retired heavyweight boxer David Tua could help Maori rekindle links with their Pacific brothers and sisters.
The Samoan sportsman is eyeing up a career in politics.
The Maori Party has had informal talks with Tua and an announcement is expected on Friday about whether he'll be part of the party's 2014 general election strategy.
Co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell says the boxer would bridge the gap between Maori and Pacific voters.
Mr Flavell says most of his Pacific brothers and sisters are on the general roll and can't vote for Maori Party candidates, but they can exercise their right through the party votes.
