Nga Potiki want own history books for tamariki

Nga Potiki o Tamapahore in Tauranga says it's talking with the Ministry of Education about developing books for kohanga reo tamariki based on the tribe's history.

The iwi signed its Treaty settlement with the Crown last weekend.

It included $3.2 million in financial redress, the return of coastal land, scenic bush and 50 acres of whenua near Papamoa.

Nga Potiki Trust chair Colin Reeder says the iwi realised at the beginning of the settlement process that kaumatua didn't know much about their history or grievances.

He says they have learnt a lot through Native Land Court records and through whakapapa, and are making moves to ensure it isn't forgotten.

Mr Reeder says it is in discussions with the Education Ministry to develop reading material for kohanga reo and early childhood level children based on stories from the Nga Potiki rohe (district).
