Ngati Kahungunu sets Te Reo deadline

7:26 pm on 14 February 2014

Ngati Kahungunu has given itself just over 10 years to make Te Reo Maori a primary language of communication in the Hawke's Bay.

The runanga has updated its Te Reo strategy which emphasises a need to research tribal dialects.

Jeremy Taatere MacLeod, director of Te Reo, Tikanga and Matauranga, says it will be a challenge to make using Te Reo Maori in its rohe an everyday feature.

He says the strategy will be handed out to several tribal entities, which will adapt the plan to their whanau and hapu needs and aspirations.

Mr MacLeod has launched tribal language classes to achieve that goal and is looking at other initiatives.
