Merearihi Whatuira believes research will show parents the success of students and encourage people to learn te reo.

She says huge efforts were made last century to revive te reo but in some pockets of Aotearoa there has been a drop in the drive to keep the language alive.

Ms Whatuira is keen for researchers to track the graduates, saying she knows tamariki who started at kohanga, went through kura kaupapa Maori and whare wananga and now have master's degrees.

Ms Whatuira - who teaches at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Nga Uri a Maui - says she'd like to know how much a kohanga education has helped the graduates.
