19th anniversary of Pakaitore

7:26 am on 28 February 2014

Te Atihaunui a Paparangi is marking the 19th anniversary of the 79-day Maori occupation of Pakaitore in Whanganui.

A number of kura kaupapa, kohanga reo and whanau will gather at what is also known as Moutoa Gardens, to mark the occasion.

The 1995 protest drew attention to the significance of Pakaitore for Whanganui Maori, and was a polarising event in the community.

Pakaitore was the site of a pa, and a traditional place for trade and for meeting.

A number of events will be held on Friday which celebrate Whanganuitanga, including a kapa haka competition and live entertainment.
