Maori Party challenged on centre

11:01 am on 11 March 2014

Mana Party leader Hone Harawira is challenging the Maori Party to get more funding for the Maori Research Centre of Excellence - or walk away from its alliance with the National-led government.

Nga Pae o Te Maramatanga has missed out on further Tertiary Education Commission funding after next year and could have to close its doors at the end of next year, when it runs out of money.

Mr Harawira said the decision to cut the funding was a step backwards for all Maori and he's challenging the Maori Party to say to the Government that enough is enough.

He says the Government is trying to kill off the research centre, which is qualified to examine how National's policies - such as state housing and welfare - are harming tangata whenua.

Mr Harawira says the only viable position for the Maori Party is to get funding for Nga Pae o Te Maramatanga, because huffing and puffing won't cut it any more.
