A Coromandel hapu is not convinced that isolating infected kauri trees will stop the spread of kauri dieback disease.
Conservation Minister Nick Smith has closed the Whangapoua Forest as a precautionary measure to limited the spread of kauri dieback disease.
It's been found in Northland, the Waitakere Ranges and on Great Barrier Island, but latest tests have confirmed its presence in the Whangapoua Forest - the first time it's been picked up in the Waikato region.
Although Dr Smith contacted iwi such as Ngati Hei, their neighbours, Ngati Huarere, say they weren't consulted about the matter and are disappointed they had to hear about it through the media.
Wanda Brljevich, a spokesperson from the sub-tribe, says the hapu is very concerned about the spread of the infection and are eager to see it dealt with quickly.
