7:38 am on 7 May 2014

The Labour Party's newly-promoted Maori Affairs spokesperson is attacking the Government's Te Reo strategy.

Nanaia Mahuta said plans to give iwi leaders greater governance and responsibility over the rejuvenation of the Maori language lacked clarity and focus.

She questioned the real intentions of Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples, and how his plan promoted the growth, revival and protection of te reo Maori.

Ms Mahuta said she intended to scrutinise the proposals in the Maori Affairs Select Committee.

On Tuesday, Ms Mahuta replaced Shane Jones as the Maori Affairs spokesperson, and moved up one place in the Labour Party caucus.
