Pita Paraone, the interim head of Te Taura Whiri i te Reo Maori (the commission), made the remark at the beginning of Te Wiki o te Reo (Maori Language Week) on Monday.

However, he believes the lessons should be optional when students get older.

Mr Paraone says there should be a level of compulsion in primary and intermediate schools, and student can continue to learn Te Reo Maori in college if they wish.

He doesn't believe it should be compulsory across the education system.
