The Kiingitanga has created its own honours system.

There are three awards: the Order of King Pootatau Te Wherowhero; the Order of the Taniwhaa; and the Illustrious Order of Te Arikinui Queen Te Atairangikaahu.
Speaking during his eighth koroneihana speech, King Tuheitia said the accolades were a way to celebrate the efforts of Maori.
He remarked that some people thought the honours were not the Maori way, but he believed his people should be acknowledged.
Today, honours were bestowed upon:
- The tribal leader Kara Puketapu of Te Ati Awa in Wellington (Order of the Taniwhaa).
- The former cabinet minister Koro Wetere (Order of the Taniwhaa).
- Princess Abigail Kekaulike Kinoiki Kawananakoa of Hawaii (Illustrious Order of Te ArikinuiQueen Te Atairangikaahu, Supreme Class), who has been recognised for her contribution to the Kiingitanga.
- Taini Puahae Rutene, who was the personal secretary to the king's late mother, Queen Te Atairangikaahu.
