Dr Sharples was MP before the general election on Saturday. Peeni Henare won the Auckland seat by 1235 votes ahead of Maori Party candidate Rangi McLean.

Mr Henare said he acknowledges Dr Sharples for all his work and the legacy he has left behind, which remains strong in Tamaki Makaurau.

He said he wanted to continue a cordial relationship with the Maori Party, to carry on Dr Sharples' legacy with honour and build on it.

The Ngati Hine man said although Labour won the seat, before the vote he agreed with Mr McLean and his party that for Tamaki Makaurau to thrive, they need to all work together.
