The life of influential film-maker Merata Mita is being made into a documentary film, to be directed by her son.
Te Taki A Merata Mita - How Mum Decolonised the Screen would be a retrospective look at her life and what influenced her.
Ms Mita, of Ngati Pikiao and Ngai Te Rangi, was the first woman in New Zealand to solely write and direct a dramatic feature film, Mauri, in 1988.
After more than 20 years of making films, she was made a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2010 before her death five months later in May. She was 67.
Her son, Heperi Mita, will receive nearly $400,000 in funding from the Film Commission and New Zealand On Air.
The documentary will focus on Ms Mita's work as a film-maker, mother, activist, feminist and teacher. It will have a cinema release and also screen on Maori Television.
