Te Reo hui not just for academics

6:15 am on 21 October 2014

A senior lecturer at Waikato University is welcoming anyone working with Te Reo to participate in a national hui about keeping the Maori language alive.

Te Whakahaumanutanga o Te Reo Maori symposium is to be held at the university in Hamilton on 13 December.

The hui will explore where the language is at and what needs to be done to keep it thriving.

Senior lecturer Sophie Knock said she has received inquiries from academics about the hui to date, but is hoping that a good cross-section of people working with Te Reo would take part.

Ms Knock has invited teachers and and hoped iwi representatives would also attend.

After the hui, she would like a committee to be established that could push issues and find solutions to problems relating to the revival of Te Reo.
