An editor of a book nominated as a finalist in a Māori book awards says it's great to be recognised for her mahi.

Massey University's Ngā Kupu Ora Aotearoa Māori Book Awards have been held since 2009, and this year 16 books have been nominated in five categories.

Marewa Glover, Paul Whitinui and Dan Hikuroa collated Ara Mai he Tētēkura: Visioning our Futures, which is nominated in the non-fiction category.

It includes experiences of new and accomplished Māori academics as a guide for other Māori who aspire to follow.

Dr Glover says there aren't many spaces to be acknowledged for this sort of mahi (work), and it's great to be nominated.

She believes the book will be of use to other Māori trying to make spaces for themselves in universities.

The winners will announced at a ceremony at Te Papa in Wellington on 13 November.
