Maori TV speaks with regional councils

6:49 pm on 28 October 2014

The Rotorua Chamber of Commerce says it would welcome Maori Television if it decides to move to the area, which would be central to Auckland and Tauranga.

Maori TV says it has spoken to Rotorua and Hamilton councils and the Auckland Council Independent Maori Statutory Board about its options once its current lease in Newmarket runs out in 2017.

The chief executive of the Chamber of Commerce, Darrin Walsh, said it is not just cheaper rent that makes the area enticing, but the city's central location.

Mr Walsh said he suspects that for Maori Television, Rotorus is known as a Maori cultural destination.

Maori Television said there is still more scoping work to do and its board of directors would make the ultimate decision.
