A rarely screened 1970s film by New Zealand's first Māori filmmaker will be revived on the big screen in Hawke's Bay this Sunday.
Ramai Hayward and her husband Rudall Hayward co-directed the film, To Love a Māori, which is a dramatised documentary of their relationship and the challenges facing urban Māori.
A spokesperson for Ngā Taonga Sound and Vision, formerly known as the New Zealand Film Archives, Diane Pivac, said the film reflected prejudiced attitudes towards interacial couples and exposed the myth that New Zealand had fabulous race relations.
The film will be screened at Museum, Theatre, Gallery, or MTG Hawke's Bay in Napier this weekend to acknowledge the passing of Ramai Hayward earlier this year. It complements an exhibition at MTG on one of the first women Māori MPs, Whetu Tirikatene-Sullivan.
