Kohanga trust delays leadership decision

The Kohanga Reo National Trustboard is retaining its leadership and intends to consider any changes to its make-up in the new year.

A working party set up this year by the movement has delivered its report to the board and its supporters about how Maori pre-schools can move forward.

The working party's report recommended some governance models for the trust and suggested returning to the table with the Government to talk about a Waitangi Tribunal report on kohanga.

The movement discussed these at a hui at Turangawaewae Marae yesterday, but no decisions about its leadership were made.

A trust spokesperson, Derek Fox, said supporters had returned home to think about the recommendations and any decisions about governance would be made after the board has spoken to its supporters.

This year, the Government urged the Kohanga Trustboard to focus on transforming its governance and management to restore public confidence despite its subsidiary being cleared of mis-spending allegations.

The Government wants the trust to address its leadership before it will revisit the Waitangi Tribunal report about Maori pre-schools.
