The Demographia International Housing Affordability Survey, released yesterday ranked Auckland as the seventh least affordable, and more expensive than Los Angeles and New York.

Chairperson of the advocacy group Te Matapihi Rau Hoskins said the news would hit Maori who were already struggling to save for a deposit.

He said with the economy looking to improve they would seek employment in areas where housing was more affordable.

Mr Hoskins said legislation was also needed to make long-term renting a more attractive and secure option for whanau.

He said creating attractive renting options needed to be worked on in tandem with affordable housing projects for Maori.
