Marae encouraged to go plastic free

7:14 am on 1 July 2015

Members of an environmental programme are encouraging tangata whenua, marae and businesses to go "plastic free" for the month.

The Marae Para Kore, or zero waste network, has launched a competition which will run throughout July - designated by a campaign group as a plastic-free July month.

The competition will see groups collect as much discarded plastic as they can, and whichever collects the most will be able to donate the prize money to a marae of their choice.

Para Kore waste advisor Emily Bailey said going plastic-free for the month might transform into a long term habit that would stop tonnes of unnecessary waste being dumped.
