The Minister of Māori Development says the sheer number of applications for help with Māori housing projects shows a new initiative is a step in the right direction.

The Māori Housing Network was launched at the weekend - it has a $7.2 million funding pool to support Māori-led housing initiatives.

Te Ururoa Flavell said it provided a one-stop shop through Te Puni Kōkiri to help improve their housing situation, by offering expert advice and information.

He said the sheer number of applications that they have already received showed there was an absolute need for advice and guidance on navigating the pipeline of housing.

Mr Flavell said that include talking with the banks, getting loans and knowing where to go for information about housing repairs and finance.
