More Māori men taking their own lives

New figures show an increase in the number of Māori men taking their own lives.

The Mental Health Foundation data for the past year shows 93 Māori men committed suicide, up from 70 the year before.

Māori make up just under 22 percent of the total 564 suicide deaths.

The foundation's Māori liaison, Witi Ashby, said more needs to be done to prevent suicide and the resources need to be there to help.

He said the latest results are not good and the shift in statistics for Māori men could mean going back to the drawing board and seeing what else can be done.

Mr Ashby also said he commended the work of vigilant people who do help prevent suicide in the community.
