Young carvers are featured in the opening exhibit of a new art gallery in Northland.

The trainees have been tutored for the past year by Moerewa kaumatua Bill Wiremu to create the pou pou, or totem-like, poles for the Twin Coast Cycle Trail.

The first of the pou pou were installed on Wednesday.

The manager of the Tātou Gallery in Moerewa's main street, Del Bristow, says the inaugural exhibition features some of the pou pou and smaller works by the carvers.

There are also photographs documenting their progress over the past year.
