A collection of manuscripts, letters and books from former New Zealand Governor, Sir George Grey, are now part of a special register set up by UNESCO, the heritage arm of the United Nations.

The items are among the first documents officially inscribed on the Memory of the World New Zealand register.

Governor Grey developed an interest in Māori and his documents are a cultural and historical record of pre-European examples of Māori knowledge of song, custom, ritual, genealogy and traditions.
