McCarten believes Māori Party has sealed fate

9:01 pm on 11 July 2011

Mana Party strategist Matt McCarten says the Māori Party has sealed its fate by turning down a mutual non-aggression pact.

Mr McCarten says Mana offered to stand aside in all the other Māori electorates if the Māori Party would stand aside in Te Tai Tokerau.

He says the Māori Party turned down the deal because it thinks a Māori Party candidate can take the seat from Hone Harawira.

Mr McCarten says it is clear to everyone in the electorate that Mr Harawira will win the seat comfortably and the Māori Party is deluded.

He says Mana is now calling for candidates to put their names forward in every Māori electorate - and that cannot help but damage the Māori Party vote.
