Tangata whenua not among majority support for park proposal

The Department of Conservation (DoC) says most of the submissions coming in on a Kauri National Park for Northland support the idea.

But it says it's acutely aware that tangata whenua do not.

Te Roroa leaders are rejecting the national park proposal, saying there's been no cultural impact study, and they want co-governance if it goes ahead.

Northland Conservator Chris Jenkins says DoC knows the iwi has strong views on the park, and will include them its eventual report to the minister.

Submissions on the Kauri National Park proposal closed on Monday.
