Ngapuhi factions still at odds over Treaty claims

A public forum on the Ngapuhi Treaty of Waitangi claims has failed to resolve a stand off over how they should be managed.

Former Prime Minister Jim Bolger umpired at a large forum at Whitiora Marae north of Kerikeri on Thursday, but failed to get a commitment from the two factions to compromise.

The board set up by the Ngapuhi runanga Tuhoronuku reiterated that it plans to start mandating meetings around the country next month to settle the claims.

Te Kotahitanga, a hapu grouping, insists on waiting until the Ngapuhi land claims have been heard starting next year.

But Mr Bolger says he believes the door is not completely shut, and he will try to arrange a private meeting between the two factions as soon as possible.
