Young Maori learning trades are better at finishing their courses than all other students at the same Hutt Valley technical institute.

The success is being put down to the new Tamaiti Whangai Academy, a initiative run by Wellington Institute of Technology (Weltec) in Petone and mentors from the local runanga.

Last year 79% of Tamaiti Whangai students completed their course last year, compared with the institute's overall completion rate of 75%.

Weltec chief executive Linda Sissons say the Maori model has now been rolled out to Pasifika students.

Dr Sissons says those students are now essentially learning in nation groups.
