Ngati Kahu looks to Tribunal after failed negotiations

6:29 am on 1 August 2011

Ngati Kahu people in Northland are asking the Waitangi Tribunal to order the return of their lands after reaching a stalemate in their negotiations with the Crown.

The tribe stands to regain thousands of hectares including Landcorp farms, but it's insisting on redress for three hapu who have no land and says the settlement can't be final.

Negotiator Margaret Mutu says the tribe will now ask the tribunal to order the Crown to give back what it took away.

She says a recent Supreme Court decision gives Ngati Kahu hope that the Tribunal will hear its case.
