Harawira becomes MP again

9:12 pm on 2 August 2011

Two weeks after being kicked out of Parliament's Debating Chamber, Mana Party leader Hone Harawira been sworn in as an MP.

Speaker of the House Lockwood Smith refused to swear in Mr Harawira in July when he began by pledging allegiance to the Treaty of Waitangi and not the Queen.

The former Maori Party MP quit Parliament to force a by-election in Te Tai Tokerau, which he won.

On Tuesday, Mr Harawira followed the rules and read the correct oath as required by law.

He says he went to finish off the oath he started two weeks ago by this time including his loyality to the New Zealand Parliament.

Mr Harawira says he now plans to meet with some of the Maori MPs to discuss whether they would support a bill to change the rules regarding the oath of allegiance.
