Te Potiki National Trust has officially launched a website, maorimaps.com, to help reconnect young urban Maori with their home marae.

The Trust was set up in 2006 by Paora Tapsell and Rereata Makiha with the express purpose of reconnecting young urban Māori - the 'potiki' generation - to their home communities and elders.

The website currently lists more than 170 marae in Northland and the trust hopes to provide details of all marae in the country by 2014.

Mr Tapsell says that if the connection is not maintained with the marae, the the culture and language will die and this is a crisis they have seen deepening in the five years since the project began.
