Octagenarian wins silver at masters' games

A kuia from Tai Tokerau has won a silver medal in the World Masters Athletics championships in the United States.

Ngawini Pepene, 80, from Kerikeri, achieved a javelin throw of 16.45 metres at the event, which was held in Sacramento.

Mrs Pepene has been competing in international masters events since she was 50, when she won her division in the Honolulu marathon.

The octogenarian gave up running just years ago and still holds a New Zealand record for javelin, set when she was 55.

Her whanau joke that she would have probably taken gold this time - except that she was had a thumb injury from a basketball game.
