Ngapuhi hapu holds second hui on treaty claim

7:37 pm on 16 August 2011

The Ngapuhi hapu opposing early settlement of their treaty claims are holding a second hui in Auckland on Tuesday evening.

The Kotahitanga alliance says about 100 people turned up to its first meeting at Mahurehure marae in Point Chevalier on Monday night.

It's staging a pre-emptive strike before the runanga-led board, Tehoronuku holds its first Auckland mandate hui on Friday, seeking Ngapuhi approval to negotiate with the Crown.

Te Kotahitanga is urging people to vote no.

It says Tuhoronuku does not fairly represent Ngapuhi, and wants settlement deferred till the land claims have been heard.

The second Kotahitanga hui started at 6.30pm on Tuesday at Otara's Whaiora marae.
