Signs of Maori times installed in Wellington

7:37 pm on 16 August 2011

Visitors and locals can now be better informed about Wellington's Maori history.

Interpretation panels have been put next to five pouwhenua, or posts, at pa sites around the city.

They spell out Maori history and tell stories - all in Te Reo and English.

The idea came from the council's Treaty Relations Manager.

Nicky Karu says councillors gave her rapid approval for the signs to be made, and people say they like them.

She says she's getting emails asking if panels can't be placed at other Maori sites.

Ms Karu says the signs were installed as part of a bigger campaign to spruce up the city for the Rugby World Cup.
