Kohanga reo claim continues

6:35 am on 18 August 2011

Kohanga reo supporters will continue their arguments on Thursday for an urgent hearing of their claims to the Waitangi Tribunal.

The Kohanga Reo Trust has filed under urgency, claiming that Maori language nests are endangered by government proposals for the early childhood sector.

The Crown is opposing the request saying the matter's significant but doesn't warrant immediate attention.

One of the trustees, Dame Iritana Tawhiwhirangi, says she's disappointed the hearing's been set down in the same week as the 5th anniversary Coronation celebrations for the Maori King, Tuheitia.

She says it's the first time some kohanga members have missed a Koroneihana.
