Government to have final say on name of Otago peak

7:14 pm on 18 August 2011

A decision of what to call a peak in Central Otago will be made by the Government.

The currently unnamed peak stands at 2307 metres - between the Remarkables and Hector Mountains.

An Arrowtown resident proposed it was called either Reko Peak or Te Kohua Peak.

Te Kohua Peak was strongly supported by Ngai Tahu and has been backed by the Geographic Board.

Kohua was the name of a three-legged iron pot, which was a gift from the explorer Nathanael Chalmers to Reko, a Ngai Tahu chief who guided the European through Central Otago in 1853.

Te Kohua Peak was chosen over Reko Peak, for its symbolism.

But the Board has asked the Government to make the final decision.

The office of the Minister for Land Information, Maurice Williamson, says there's no timeframe for when that decision will be made.
