7:06 pm on 31 August 2011

The Maori Women's Welfare League's 59th national conference, where members will elect a new national president, started on Wednesday.

It is being held at Pettigrew Green Arena in Taradale, Napier.

The league says Mere Austin took over as acting national president following the death of the national president Meagan Joe in July.

Votes had been sent out by post and the result of the ballot for new president is expected to be announced on Saturday 3 September.
