New round in Tainui dispute

10:00 am on 3 September 2011

The head of Waikato-Tainui's parliament has again said Tukoroirangi Morgan has been disqualified from the parliament and the iwi's executive.

A power struggle between Te Kauhanganui chair Tania Martin and Mr Morgan has been playing out in public for more than a month.

The conflict centres on spending, financial reporting and, ultimately, the undermining of the parliament's role.

Ms Martin says the decision to disqualify Mr Morgan is conclusive and it's time to move on.

But a spokesperson for Mr Morgan says he has not been dropped and is still the chair of the executive - and says the latest bid to get rid of him is an interpretation of a legal opinion.

Under the tribe's rules, Mr Morgan has to be a member of the parliament to lead the iwi's executive arm.

Mrs Martin has said previously the dispute may go to mediation, rather than court.
