Rapid settlement for Auckland Treaty claim

6:55 pm on 10 September 2011

The Government says as Treaty claims go, one that was resolved on Friday happened at lightning speed.

Ngati Whatua o Kaipara and the Crown have signed a settlement at Aotea-Shelly Beach, on the shores of Kaipara Harbour.

The settlement includes commercial and financial redress worth about $22 million, including the transfer of Woodhill Forest.

Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations Chris Finlayson says the negotiations leading up to today have been very, very constructive.

Under the leadership of Margaret Kawharu and a very good claims committee, we've got to deed of settlement in under 24 months, and I would say, in treaty terms that's almost lightning speed.
