The Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says it's an exciting day for the city with the arrival of a second ceremonial waka.

The new waka taua (war canoe) will partner the waka tetekura, Te Hononga, which arrived in August.

The waka taua was carved in Tai Tokerau under the guidance of renowned waka builder Hekenukumai Busby and master carver Takirirangi Smith.

Ms Wade-Brown, says the waka will eventually be housed in the wharewaka, Te Raukura which was constructed especially for the purpose on the waterfront.
