A short film by Maori film maker Kararaina Rangihau has screened in the United States as part of a National Geographic film festival.

The 15-minute film Takau Rakau E, which was written and directed by Ms Rangihau from Tuai west of Wairoa, has been showing at the All Roads Film Festival in Washington DC.

The festival provides a platform for indigenous and under-represented minority culture storytellers around the world to showcase their works to a wide audience.

Ms Rangihau says it's a great honour for the film to be part of such a prestigious event.

She says the film has already had an overseas showing as a warm-up short for Taika Waititi's feature film Boy at in Toronto last year.

Ms Rangihau, who describes herself as an emerging film-maker, says she was delighted that Takau Rakau E won the audience award at this year's fifth Wairoa Maori Film Festival.
