The board of Te Ohu Kaimoana, the Maori Fisheries Trust, has appointed Whaimutu Dewes as the chair of Aotearoa Fisheries.

Mr Dewes, of Ngati Porou and Ngati Rangitihi descent, served for 10 years on the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission, and was the deputy chair of the Sealord Group.

Te Ohu Kaimoana chair Matiu Rei says Mr Dewes brings a wealth of business and financial experience, as well as the experience of his work with the New Zealand fishing industry.

Mr Dewes is currently a director on the boards of Contact Energy and Housing New Zealand.
