11:37 pm on 23 September 2011

The Northland town of Kerikeri is turning on a special welcome for the Tongan Rugby World Cup team on Sunday.

The town is holding a special church service at the Kerikeri Sports Complex at 10.30am, and is open to the public.

That'll be followed by a formal umu lunch for 200 people, including the Tongan team, management, supporters, local Tongan people and guests. The lunch is by invitation only.

The Tongan team will be doing a meet and greet about 12.30pm to give fans a chance to get photographs and autographs.

Tonga has played two World Cup games in Whangarei, a loss to Canada and a win over Japan and have been a big hit with the public.

Their final game is on 1 October against France in Wellington.
