Tasman District Council has agreed to a request by local iwi to appoint a kaumatua in an effort to enhance its understanding of Maori priorities.
Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says Archdeacon Andy Joseph has agreed to take up the role.
He says the appointment recognises the importance of iwi and theTreaty of Waitangi in the Tasman district.
It follows two years of consultation with seven iwi, including Ngati Tama, Ngati Koata, and Ngati Rarua.
Mr Kempthorne says the Reverend Joseph will provide him with advice about tikanga Maori at civic events.
