Support for inquiry into well-being of Maori children

8:40 am on 30 September 2011

The Maori child advocacy trust Te Kahui Mana Ririki is right behind the Maori Affairs Select Committee holding an inquiry into the status and well-being of Maori children.

The committee agreed in June to hold an inquiry and confirmed its terms of reference on Wednesday.

It will consider submissions covering six areas including public investment in Maori children across the health, education, social services and justice sectors.

Trust chair Hone Kaa says as a result of a Maori Affairs Select Committee inquiry into the tobacco industry the Government has committed to a vision of a smoke-free New Zealand.

He hopes the inquiry into the status and well-being of Maori children will be equally influential.
