A Tauranga iwi has created an online TV channel aimed partly at teaching people about its tribal identity and what makes their location or rohe unique.

Ngai Te Rangi's AO-TV broadcasts in both Maori and English, targeting a mainly youthful audience who are technologically savvy with the internet and social networking sites.

A producer, Kahotapu Black, says the station is gearing up to broadcast lessons about what to do on Tauranga marae, as well as teach people about their tribal proverbs.

He says the channel will be running tutorials about what the correct kawa is on local marae as well as whakatauki or sayings.

Kahotapu Black says AO-TV also promotes local musicians and events.

He says it's also a training ground for any Ngai Te Rangi people interested in learning about television production.
